1. Look at the sellers reviews and ratings.
2. Do not buy from sellers that use stock images and have a very vague description of the book itself, these are nearly always scams. Buy from book sellers that use their own photos, if they don't see if they have a very descriptive review of the book itself.
3. If you have no choice but to buy from a seller on AbeBooks that uses a stock photo and has a very vague description, email them and ask about the condition and if a tracking number will be supplied. If the seller responds in a short time and provides you these answers then you should be safe to go ahead and purchase it. If they don't, avoid buying from them as most likely it is a scam.
What you have to know,
Don't be stupid, do your research!
After a month, the 2nd book never showed so I contacted the seller. Seller never answered back. So I initiated a refund. The seller then sends me tracking info for the first book I already received. Another email and I finally got tracking info. Says it was delivered to my home. It was not, so I emailed again and AbeBooks told me to ask my roommates (who are my children) or check my garage (which is always closed and locked). I contacted the USPS and they said it is out of their hands.
I asked Abe Books to do the right thing and issue and refund (the book was less than $10). They have refused to help in any way and told me I am basically lying and in fact, do have the book in my possession. Why would I lie about a $10 book?
They won't help further and my emails go unanswered by Abe Books. I am out my money and help. Never use this site for anything. They take your money and run.
At least these bookstores were still able to sell their books, which were sitting on their shelves with no movement. Food stores have to throw their crap away - small bookstores can at least wait and hope for an order. I had thought that Abe Books was giving a second breath to old bookstores.
The books were often hard to get on other online book places - and most importantly, it wasn't the Amazon Monopoly Monster. By buying through Abe Books, I was also standing up against the Bezos' Mutation.
In the past, I would order books from them, but with at least each order, there was always at least one of the books that either never arrived, or the bookseller sent some flim flam copy of the book, or some other book scam. Yet, Abe Books would promptly get back to me and refund the book order completely to my bank-debit card account. This is why I would always return to Abe Books.
My last experience was not good at all however. I finally did receive a book that I had ordered - but it was after a month of waiting for it!
Abe Books did get back to me after I had complained to them about the bookseller sending me a bogus tracking number. The bookseller got scared and finally sent the book, after having ordering it two weeks ago.
But the problem was that Abe Book's customer service also stated that I could reject order if it did not arrive at the Estimated Delivery time and get a refund. The tracking link was definitely hard to decipher too.
I finally read that it was delivered to the destination. And this was true. But the long wait was horrifying. Imagine if I was a student who needed the book for a university class?
Here are the problems with Abe Books and the reasons why I am not going to use Abe Books' service anymore, even after years of good use.
First, like the reviewer wrote, "Make sure to pay attention,' many of the booksellers are disreputable sellers. Small bookstores, unfortunately, are often run by mentally disturbed characters. I have seen this throughout my travels and visits to small bookstores around the world. They can only relate to books and have become horrible misanthropes - and of course, bad Karma follows them continually through life. With Amazon totally killing the book selling market, these deranged individuals now hate on their customers - even through we are using Abe Books to avoid the Amazon Monopoly. This is the only reason I can fathom why any bookseller would not deliver a book, send a bad copy, or some flim flam summary of the book in a pamphlet, rather than the book itself.
These booksellers often have ratings that are not full five stars. There is no place on Abe Books to write bad ratings for them either, and Abe Books does not care about the bad ratings of booksellers. Abe Books will continue to use them. They only use booksellers that happen to have particular books in their dusty stocks, lying somewhere on a dirty shelf.
Yes, one has to read the bookseller reviews carefully - but to do this with every single order makes the experience of purchasing of just one book, another mode of suffering under the loaded gun of Capitalism. We just don't have the time to go through this rigamarole with every single order.
Also, keep in mind, Abe Books is now located in Victoria, British Colombia. The company runs on the commission scam like in South Asia and other money lender schemes, and just like Etsy and AirBNB.
The booksellers have to pay a sum to play. Abe Books' only concern is that it gets its commissions for every single order. Abe Books collects the profits, while the bookseller can finally unload a little of their book hoarding funk. This is late stage Capitalism folks.
Abe Books supplies the basic website, while the booksellers have to deal with their overstocks. Have you noticed that Abe Books searches often turn up the same books twice in a list? Have you also noticed that Abe Books has no customer service contact telephone number at all? This is only one step away from leading into corporate fraud.
Yes, I got my book finally. But I learned my lesson with them, and will not go through the suffering of waiting on a book for a month's time, and meanwhile, sending unanswered e-mails on an online comment form. No business is worth such suffering.
So what do we do about ordering books? Well, for those hard to find books, possibly out of print, we might have to bite the bullet and order from Amazon, or some other book service that specializes in out of print books. But beware... Just like Abe Books, read their online reviews first.
Most books are not in this order however. All public libraries now have access to the InterlIbrary Loan System. Now, any library user can order a book and read it for free. The reader can also extend the reading time of the book until it is finished. Having to buy an actual book and then let it sit on one's shelf to gather dust - never to be read again. Is this not the case with most of our books sitting on our shelves at home?
Finally, when looking up Abe Books on line, I was shocked to see that almost all of their reviews online were totally horrible. Many of the scammed victims were poor university students. This is very bad. With all of the suffering Abe Books has given out, there is no way I could use their service in good conscience. Lesson learned and I luckily dodged a bullet.
The rating system on this site is based solely on order fulfillment (how quickly it arrived, that sort of thing) and it's rated automatically. If you had any problems with the delivery or the product itself, you can't write a review to warn other customers. So while a seller may look reputable because of their 5 star rating, there's no way of knowing if AbeBooks actually deserve that rating. Their books may arrive on time but come in unusable shape—or be a completely different item than what you ordered—and they'd still receive a 5 star rating from the system. The rating system is extremely deceptive, making ordering from this site very risky.
Despite my own great experience with purchasing from AbeBooks, I would not recommend using them. It's a gamble, as you could either have a great experience or a nightmarish experience, as you can tell from all the bad reviews. Unless you're willing to take the risk, avoid AbeBooks and try to find your books elsewhere.
Hello,
Thank you for contacting AbeBooks.

AbeBooks may at any time and in its discretion immediately suspend or terminate (in whole or in part) your permission to use the Web sites without any notice or liability to You or any other person.
Please note that all orders have been cancelled and no charge was applied to the credit card.
Regards,
There has even been a charge on my credit card and i have been waiting for these books for 3 weeks! I hope the goverment or somebody starts taking action about this scam company.
I even contacted Abe's customer service and they basically said "sorry, you aren't getting a refund because the seller chose to not give you your money back." I am in my last semester of college and I have never had any issues with books, but this was my first AND LAST time ever using AbeBooks. Please spend your money with Bookbyte or Chegg, at least they have actual return policies and won't screw you over. Do not waste your time with this sorry, unethical excuse of a "business."
The second book I bought is from an Indian company which ostensibly had a maximal rating. The book was supposed to be over 800 pages, A4 format and over 1 kg. Although I paid extra charges for the 1 kg, not only was the book less than 1 kg, it was also a printed pdf with a paperback attached to it with a A5 format. Fair enough, at least it does the job you must say; well no, because the characters are so small, the book cannot be read.
At this point you must be saying that there may be some shady vendors out there. However abebooks does not do what it is supposed to do- regulate the relationship between buyer and seller. Instead it chooses to let customers resolve their own problems, and often without success.
In the meantime, GoldBooks had a new ad for the same new book I purchased, but now was selling the book for almost three times what I paid. I was immediately suspicious knowing that there weren't many new copies of this book around. Therefore, I wasn't surprised, when I received the book she finally sent, that not only was this book not new, it was a completely different book, a book that I hadn't purchased. It also wasn't nearly as expensive as the book I had purchased.
After many emails, Alysia finally admitted that she had my book, and would send it to me, but unsurprisingly, she has stopped responding to me, and AbeBooks has issued a refund.
I find it very disturbing that GoldBooks apparently defrauded me, and AbeBooks couldn't care less. I'm also concerned about whether I will ever actually receive the refund because AbeBooks will not give me a date as to when I will get the refund, and because many reviewers on this website have had difficulty receiving refunds.
So, rhetorically, why not one star? The reason is that the abebooks phone service did initiate a refund promptly in my case.
My case: Placed an order, paying for expedited shipping. Seller waited ten days to ship, then purchased the cheapest shipping service available (media mail), not priority service, as promised. Book is not scheduled to arrive by promised date. Seller sent obviously false claims in email.
Overall, I'd say that abebooks is a service I would use, but not if I needed the book promptly. If I had, say, six or eight weeks before I needed the book, I'd try abebooks, then cancel the transaction if the associated seller failed to deliver, using another supplier.
11-19-14 I just wanted to add an update. I ordered 3 books from Blue Cloud Books through Abebooks on 11-14 and they came in on 11-17. Very fast but the package only had to go from Phoenix to Tucson. The email for order confirmation was sent from Thriftbooks.com so they must be affiliated with them.
4-9-17 With all the bad reviews I just wanted to say I still have not had any problems. I even ordered several books from Better World Books in Dufermline, United Kingdom and all was fine! PLEASE STATE THE NAME OF THE ACTUAL COMPANY YOU'RE BUYING BOOKS FROM!
4-27-17 I ordered a book from Better World Books/West (Las Vegas) through and they sent the wrong book. After contacting them they authorized abebooks for a refund and let me keep the book.
Update: I'm am open minded person and as such I decided to take another look at Abey Babeby. Once again, they have performed perfectly for me. With the exception of only providing older books, I have not had any troubles getting the correct book each and every time I ordered, the books have also been shipped to me in a reasonable amount of time, and I have never failed to receive what I paid for. I will admit that sometimes a book will take a week or three to get to me, but I suppose that this has something to do with the price I paid for the book. Putting myself in the shoes of the seller, if a customer such as me had paid something like $1.99 for a 20 dollar book, I probably wouldn't be all that motivated to ship it out Licket-EE-Split. Is that Abe books flaw or is it the motivation of the actual seller? Of course, if I needed a book immediately, I probably wouldn't be looking for a used book and I would probably try to physically put my hands on it before I paid my money, but that's just me. Whether I would rate Amazon dot com highly or not, in my estimation, also has to factor in the VERY HIGH prices they charge for every book they have regardless if that same book can be bought at Abey-Babey for a fraction of the cost. I guess that beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, but I haven't been swayed at all away from the world famous www.abebooks.com. At Abey-Babey, one may buy many good books for a fraction of what they might cost elsewhere with very little difficulty. Where the persons that wrote all the negative reviews of abe books encountered all their difficulty I don't know because I have NEVER experienced any of this. Each time I simply located a cheap book that I was interested in. I bought it. An affiliate of Abe books then delivered the book to me next in approximately the time that they said they would. This has been my entire experience in the hundreds of books I have bought through Abey-Babey. As I am not doing anything magical and as none of my family is an owner or operator of Abe books, I'm certain that an average person will have the same experience as me. Now... put that in your pipe and smoke it.
I received two of the books I wanted. The third one was missing and instead I got other books! From the same author and being PART of the third volume but two were missing. I've got $400 stolen from me since the whole point was to have a collection of three volume representing the life's work of the poet.
I wrote them absolutely furious, they said they could send me the third volume when they would have it ("some day", WTH!) or that they could refund me but I had to put a tracking on the books! I had to find a company to send the books internationally and I didn't want to deal with them and lose more time. They then wrote me saying the return/refund got cancelled because it took me too long, WTF! So I got sold the wrong books, I paid for them and I'm stuck with them because I didn't send the books back fast enough (hello, I had to wait 4 month and you can give me one?)
Do NOT use this company, they probably are lying about the book you are looking for. They are unbelievable in a very bad way. I still can't believe how screwed I am!
It turns out that sellers have the option to market 3-6 business days then use cheap shipping options that take up to a month.
One particular seller wont look into the issue until the book hasnt arrived for 30days. This seller is Textbookrush, AbeBooks took my money for faster shipping, then sent it packaged bound, then they sent me emails stating I needed to follow the tracking number. It took 7 emails and me getting quiet snarky to get them to state they wont do anything for 30days. I live in Michigan, they sent it out of ohio, there is no logical reason I shouldnt have this book by now, a full 22 days later.
The worst part is I spent 2hrs on the phone waiting through customer service holds at the USPS for them to tell me that they dont have a package associated with the tracking number, their system clearly shows that the slip was generated, but it never arrived at a facility to begin the official tracking process. Which means that textbookrush generated a slip, but from their on thwir end soley nothing more was done. Hey human error right? Heres the thing, Textbookrush REFUSES to do anything for 30 days, their website independently of abebooks states they wont return anything after 30days...
I dont really care at this point I am livid, but this is why I only online shop with my credit card, I can submit a claim on the 30th and they will get my money back for me, thats the beauty of discover.
However, I wouldnt reccomend using abebooks, they have not helped facilitate this concern at all. In fact because the company supplied a tracking number, they wont allow a refund to even start and requires me to do all the handling with the company, which is already NOT handling it in any intelligble way.
So this means that abebooks does not advocate for their customers like other warehouse or title sites do.
Maybe Amazon has spoiled me, but this is not acceptable to me at all. I wouldnt reccomend abebooks, and I would suggest everyone read the return and shipping policy for textbookrush, if you use their direct website, because they have things like a 151% restock fee, and insane shipping policies that only benefit their own screw ups and a complete lack of integrity in their customer service department.
If you have a problem with your purchase, you can complain to AbeBooks or directly to the vendor. I have received refunds or replacements on the few occasions I was unhappy. Most of the time, however, booksellers are true believers in the printed word, and will be honorable. Each vendor is rated from one to five stars, and you can restrict your search to the highest-rated sellers.
Once in awhile, you may find better deals elsewhere; otherwise, you will discover that the the same sellers also advertise the same merchandise on various other book sites. AbeBooks wins my vote because I've bought about a thousand books from them over the years, and I still have most of them.
