Review of BetterWorldBooks customer complaints, rating & accreditation on Better Business Bureau
Is BetterWorldBooks registered on BBB?
BetterWorldBooks is not registered on BBB. Therefore, this business has no BBB rating and accreditation.
I've made a complaint with the Better Business Bureau (I'm not the first!) and I hope I could get refund. Nevertheless, I've spent a lot of time demanding that the Internet Order Merchandise Rule be honoured, and time is money.
Hope this review will help you, don't go with them, they are fraudster!
The books were both labeled the same but are not in the small category to me. The Missing Diary picture looks better than in real life including the small food stain on the bottom left at the binding. Just not quite sure how BetterWorldBooks can both be "used very good". You just have to know it can happen.
I found what I sought here, and my total price for the purchase was $5.03—that's right, five dollars and three cents. This included an optional five cents for "carbon neutral shipping"; shipping is otherwise always free. Described as in "good" condition, I would have called the book's condition "very good"; aside from a few small library stickers on the cover (probably removable), I could hardly distinguish it from a new book off the shelf.
The icing on the cake is the outstandingly helpful and friendly customer service, in sharp contrast to so many customer "service" operations. Hint: Make a note of the customer service number, *******303, which is not easy to find on the website.
Now, just be aware that these are, in many cases, ex-library books (not a fact BetterWorldBooks seek to conceal, it's stated clearly there on the site somewhere.) So be prepared for stickers / stamps / card pockets / chips / dings / dog-ears / minor tears / blemishes / yellowing, etc. but in many cases, the condition of the book inside is perfect. Bear in mind these are priced well below market value, so it's well worth it.
A massive plus is free shipping worldwide - that in itself makes the purchase worthwhile to me. I've often paid more in shipping from Amazon than the price of the book itself!
Two tiny things - no online tracking for shipments, in many cases (though everything I've ordered has arrived promptly, and without problems). Also, clicking on a book often yields a "darn, we just sold that"-type message. Maybe the stock turnover is actually high, so they can't update in real time.
Big plus - your purchases do a bit of good for world literacy!
I don't know what else to write.
Adding a Percy Bysshe Shelley poem to this review to exceed the minimum character limit:
ENGLAND IN 1819
An old, mad, blind, despised, and dying king,--
Princes, the dregs of their dull race, who flow
Through public scorn, mud from a muddy spring,--
Rulers who neither see, nor feel, nor know,
But leech-like to their fainting country cling,
Till BetterWorldBooks drop, blind in blood, without a blow,--
A people starved and stabbed in the untilled field,--
An army which liberticide and prey
Makes as a two-edged sword to all who wield,--
Golden and sanguine laws which tempt and slay;
Religion Christless, Godless, a book sealed,--
A Senate—Time's worst statute unrepealed,--
Are graves from which a glorious Phantom may
Burst to illumine our tempestuous day.

Fyi, I didn't write this, Percy Bysshe Shelley did, but it's in the public domain, so I think we're done here.
I place dozens of orders and purchase hundreds of books annually but, as much as I am impressed with the BetterWorldBooks contents and delivery, I will not be able to use the website without these additions to their UI tool set.
I stayed away from them for a while, but was forced back to them because I wanted a specific book and bwb was the only website that carried it (and at a reasonable price to boot). To my surprise, my order came in a reasonable amount of time, so my faith in them has been restored a little. I'm still a bit wary of them, but I might buy from them again if I find another book with a reasonable price and which I cannot find anywhere else.
They also reward points for your purchases, or referrals, and offer discounts ranging from 15% - 30% depending on the number of books you buy from the Bargain Bin. Best of all, they accept books for donation at drop boxes and give back to others in grants, special projects, and literacy partners such as books for Africa. Love these guys!
First, BetterWorldBooks sent books that were in acceptable condition—but were listed as like new or very good—and very, very beat up. None of the other books were as described either, which makes me believe they aren't even slightly transparent with their condition/quality descriptions. They offered a quick refund and apologized but it certainly left a bad taste in my mouth.
Second time, after I took a four or five month break in between purchases, they sent me THE WRONG ORDER. Entirely. I ordered three books and they sent me three random books that were clearly somebody else's order. I asked them to rectify it—afterall, they still had at least two of the books in stock at the same price. Another "apology" (I say it like this because frankly it barely was one) and refund, no books. So, here I am waiting to get the refund knowing that by the time I do the books will absolutely be out of stock.
It's a shame because my first experience with them was great. Now, I have to think they are nothing more than a cheaply drawn scam artist in disguise.
Pro tip: Always go for Used Very Good' or 'Used Like New'!
Overall, i'm somewhat pleased with the books i purchased and would definitely return for more!
The first one that arrived was damaged. I called to inform them that this was only one of several I'd bought in this shape. I called the post office to complain, with no luck, as presumed it was carriers fault.
BWB rep stated BetterWorldBooks would send me a replacement and that it was a "new" copy. I received the second in worse shape than the first. It was not new by any means.
I feel I was lied to.
Read John S. Review.
I do appreciate the rep trying to help me, but quite disappointed in what I received.
BWB. To provide resources so that each child in a class could have a research book about a given topic, particularly in history and science, I relied on the great breadth of books available through BWB. My budget went much further and gave a "better bang for the buck." I would bring a box into a classroom anklet the children help unpack it, which added to their sense of adventure and excitement about each topic.
Now retired, I order book club books for myself and friends, as libraries cannot support the demand for many multiple copies, and paying retail prices is beyond the reach of a retiree. All in all, a treasure trove of good reading copies. BetterWorldBooks are not (or rarely ever) new.
I came across an article a friend posted on Facebook about alternatives to using Amazon, which I often used to buy books in the past. I've tried several of the sites suggested, but so far, Better World is the best.
The prices are unbeatable, even by Amazon in many cases. Many used books are listed at $3.98 or thereabouts, and there is always a sale or promotion going on, so you can get some amazing deals.
The selection is excellent as well. Delivery is reasonably fast (I suspect it would be even quicker without the complications caused by the pandemic).
Probably the only thing I'm not crazy about is that many items don't include a picture, or don't match the actual item being purchased. Book covers are important to me and I like to know exactly what I'm getting.
That's about all. I've shared the URL with friends on my Facebook page. BetterWorldBooks probably think I'm being paid by Better World for publicity, know matter how much I deny it.
