The second rep was better in helping me work through my question in regards to how the HT receiver I was looking at would support my overall goals for my HT and my wired speakers in the rest of my home. The one thing I really liked was the image sharing the second rep used to make sure we were both talking about the same thing. He was a little unclear on 5.1 vs 7.1 but we worked through it. Like the first rep, he tried to upsell me. This time it was 2 additional sets of speakers before he really knew what my current set up was and what the room would support.
In the end I'm happy with the service. If Crutchfield are on commission then I understand the upselling but if both reps had taken the time to learn more about what I wanted they could have handled my call faster reducing the wait time of others on hold and maybe even drove more business for you.
I bought some of my items direct from you and some I used my Amex points and indicated Crutchfield as my provider of choice.
Thanks and I will be back.

Cons: No manual included, dim and low-res display, no Playlist playback from USB.
I live in the mountains at the edge of FM radio reception from the nearest city. I called Crutchfield tech support and said I wanted a stereo that was good at picking up weak radio, among other things. The tech recommended Pioneer units as having superior reception. I decided on this unit (MHV-S600BS) as it had all the features I wanted and man, was the tech right about the radio. I can clearly pick up stations that previously were mostly static.
But I hardly wanted the stereo just for radio. I also wanted to add Bluetooth capability so I could make hands-free phone calls and needed a USB port for my music. I ordered a scratch-dent model but, too be honest, the box neve looked opened and I couldn't find a single flaw.
Installation was a breeze, especially with the included Metra wiring harness. I used Posi-Twist connectors to tie the harnesses to the unit (item #669PP500), which were more compact and secure than standard wire nuts yet easily removable, unlike crimp or solder.
Pioneer does not ship this with any sort of manual, just a single (large) page with basic installation instructions in 4 languages. Luckily Crutchfield do offer a full manual (PDF) on their web site for download. I didn't need this for installation as the wiring were all standard colors but it was a must-have for figuring out the menu options.
Bluetooth setup was a snap. Linked right up with both my Samsung Android and my iPhone. I mounted the microphone to the steering column of my truck. My wife says that she can tell I'm on speaker but the calls are clear, even at highway speeds. I'm still having trouble getting the unit to pull down my Recent/Dialed/Missed contacts but I honestly haven't tried too hard yet.
The Display is decent. I've found it to be a bit dim. Having access to the full color spectrum and lots of bouncy pixels is cool, I guess, but not something I care much about. It is a low resolution screen with fairly large pixels but about what I'd expect for around $100. It offers a lot of display options and layouts. It took some playing around but I found a layout that displays time on the top row and track info on the main screen, which is what I prefer.
I have my music, about 12GB worth, on a low-profile thumb drive. Navigating through the USB device isn't very smooth or intuitive but I usually just set it to random. I was a bit disappointed to discover that I cannot select music by artist or playlist, only by folder. Artist/playlist sorting appears to only be available for streamed (Pandora/Spotify) playback and I use neither.
The sound from this is quite amazing. I have an older pickup with low-end tri-axial speakers front and rear, no subwoofer. Since 95% of the time I am alone in the truck I programmed it for 'Position', front/left. I have the EQ set to 'Natural' (one of 5 presets plus two custom) and the sound is the best this truck has ever heard. I am picking up things I have never heard before, in songs I've listened to 100 times. There are options for simulating a subwoofer, which I plan to test out, and for adding 'Loudness', which just seems wrong. If you want you can also manually adjust fade/balance, band crossover, and speaker timing manually but so far the factory sets seem to satisfy me needs.
This was easily worth the $100 and I would recommend it for anyone wanting a versatile car stereo without breaking the wallet.
The Sony unit has a threaded hole on the back of the chassis that is intended to be used to attach a rear support. No screw that fit that hole came with the radio nor did it come with the dash kit shipped with the radio to help mount it in the dash. Found the metric screw I needed in my hardware collection but had to shorten it and add a lock washer. Sounds simple enough but took about an extra hour (most of my hardware collection has Imperial (English) threads rather than the metric threads the Sony uses).
The reviews and Crutchfield support recommended running at least a 12ga. Wire directly from the battery to the radio for constant power. However, the ReadyHarness I ordered required me to cut the power lead to make that connection. Not a huge deal but I think it would have been better if the harness provided for that option. Thought it odd the recommendation was for only the positive power connection. No mention was made of doing the same thing for the ground connection. Not sure I understand that - Crutchfield both play a part in getting adequate power into the unit. The unit itself is electrically isolated from ground due to all the plastic mounting (well except for the wiring harness and antenna ground). Anyhow I ran an extra ground wire to the ground connection - perhaps not needed but it certainly will not hurt anything. Logically I have one other concern here in that the heavier gauge wire still has to connect to the lead in the ReadyHarness which is much smaller than 12Gauge and I would think that could negate much of the value of running the heavier wire from the battery to that connection. Time and lots of high volume playing will tell whether or not it was worth the trouble to make the heavier gauge connections.
This was not my first install of an aftermarket radio so I was surprised the Sony unit did not include install instructions. The dash mount kit instructions were a bit sparse. The install instructions provided by Crutchfield are OK but also a bit sparse. Am glad this was not my first aftermarket radio install.
Never-the-less, the radio is now installed, looks good and sounds great. The Sony Music | Center App is worth the download. Am liking the unit a lot and looking forward to my next road trip.
The installation kit was missing four screws, causing me to have to scrounge around for screws to hold the radio to the install kit. Also the clips and screws provided in the kit to secure it to the dash were un-useable with very poor instructions on what to do with them. Had to improvise and drill/screw my own screws to mount.
Needed to use the car the next morning so no time to call customer service and wait for correct parts to be shipped.
The Pioneer MVH-S600BS - Seems way underpowered. Like less powerful than the factory radio. I would not recommend this unit to anyone. Apparently you have to spend more to get something that produces factory level audio quality.
Disappointing experience overall.
However, I have a 25 year old SONY 5.1 surround sound receiver which was failing. I needed something to be compatible with a turntable, CD player, satellite receiver, flat screen TV and Blu-ray player. I did have to buy a pre-amp for the turntable, but that was a small sacrifice.
In my search for something compatible, the Crutchfield website was one that I came across. It was easily accessible, had helpful information from website personnel and reviews from customers. The price seemed very reasonable and had 2-day shipping. I ordered the receiver and preamp on a Thursday and everything arrived on a Monday. Wow. (of course it's 4 days, but there was a weekend in there...) Still, that's pretty damn fast considering they're in Virginia and I am in Washington State.
The new receiver was more than I expected for pretty much an entry level surround sound system, but totally adequate. My long playing records have never sounded better. Even Blu-rays of musical performances sound better than before.
Although the SONY I had for so many years was really good, the technology has progressed where whatever media I use sounds better than ever.
I did have to contact their Customer Service with a basic question which was answered very quickly. The added touch of adding several sheets of free "cable labels" was very helpful.
I'm extremely pleased I made a switch to the new receiver and am pleased with my experience with "Crutchfield".
I would have no problem recommending "Crutchfield".
I went on your site and easily found the item I needed. I had a couple of questions, started to call for an associate, found the answers right in front of me. I registered and ordered in record time. The order was promised for a Thursday delivery but arrived 2 days early. Absolutely best online company service ever. There are a lot of huge companies out there who have horrible websites, hard to navigate, take forever to get order done. Thank you for great service. The item is a Christmas gift so will send update after the holidays.
This is the recipients second player, same brand, upgrading to bluetooth, but nothing fancy. I am sure he will be very happy.
So now our "new" 2010 Chrysler van has all the missing parts. The dash sports a new Sony touch screen. The tailgate has a camera so my wife feels comfortable in reverse. OEM speakers have been replaced with Harman Kardon units that make the originals sound like absolute junk.
Was it easy? No way. Issues every step along the way, but with some input over a brief phone call, a better method came to light. Removing large sections of your car interior may seem daunting, but if you're careful and follow the provided instructions you can perform a task just short of magic! Plus, you'll save hundreds doing the work yourself.
I recently moved, and in my new home I was interested in buying a TV antenna setup. Crutchfield had a great article on selecting an antenna, installing it, etc. and Crutchfield recommended their pick for the best antenna and accessories. Great! I also noticed they were available on Amazon for about the same price, but since I found the info through Crutchfield it felt right to buy through them instead, despite Amazon being more convenient.
I wish I'd gone Amazon. The next day after I submitted the order I got a call from Crutchfiled. They were refusing to process my order because my shipping address was different than my billing address, despite that having been an option in the online ordering. I gave them both addresses and cleared up which was the billing address (my old house, which I still own) and which was the shipping address (new house).
Now if I accidentally entered the wrong address online we should have been able to clear that up and move forward, but I don't think I did.
Not wanting to put too much effort in, I went online and changed my address with the bank--something that in my mind I had the right to do on my own time, considering that I still own both places. I let Crutchfield know I'd made that change via email and they called me back to say that they still couldn't do it. Maybe the change hadn't taken effect yet?
I took this opportunity to ask why they didn't allow different shipping addresses and billing addresses when every other company in the world does, and why this was an option on the website if it was against their policy. Either Crutchfield is very strange and has a major bug in their ordering software (unlikely) or their wires got crossed and two different customer service representatives (different person on the line each call) were too confused to figure out how to keep the sale.
When I asked the last service person what was to keep me from cancelling the order and just buying through Amazon who wouldn't shake me down about my address I expected him to try to keep me as a customer. Instead he told me the real answer to the rhetorical question: "nothing."
Good. Order cancelled.
Long story short: if you can find it on Amazon instead, and if the price is the same or just a little more, buy it there instead. Learned my lesson.
We are still attempting to learn about the TV. There is no large manual with the TV. You need to play around with the various settings once you go to settings on the TV. Apparently e didn't receive all the parts that were to come with the TV (according to the Quick Setup Manual) but we are assuming that the missing part had something to do with wall mounting which we were not doing.
The picture is great and otherwise I am very satisfied with the purchase.
Unusual for Crutchfield they sent me the wrong instructions and when I finally got the correct ones they were overly vague. I modified the mounting point in my truck for the new kit as per the instructions and the fit was horrible. After more mods to my dash I slid the unit in to find that it set 3/8" too low for the factory dash to snap back in place. I tried to remove the head unit to further hack away at my dash but could find no way to do. AFlyer a call to Crutchfield tech I find out that once snapped in place that the head unit COULD NOT EVER BE REMOVED FOR REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT WITHOUT REMOVING THE ENTIRE DASH! Remove the entire dash to replace a radio? That is a massive job including air bags, gauges and heat and air ducts. Why does Crutchfield even offer an installation that doesn't allow a repair or replacement ever again? Why wasn't there a warning about this?
To say I'm EXTREMELY disappointed in Crutchfield is an understatement!
I really thought they had the best equipment and installation kits available... I was wrong!
