Scentbird gives me the ability to try out fragrances that fit my scent profile without spending an arm and a leg doing it. I also get to choose perfumes I've loved in the past in addition to the excitement of adding new scents to my perfume inventory. Sure, I've gotten scents that I really don't care for or won't ever wear, but the choice has always been mine to make. I've seen some people get angry with Scentbird when Scentbird hate a perfume they've received... but you need to remember, you are the one putting the scents into your queue, not Scentbird. So if you get something you don't like, you just need to choose something different next month. Hopefully you'll hit the jackpot and find a fragrance you truly can't live without. But until that happens, Scentbird gives you the ability to buy and use any perfume you want on their site for a very nominal price. It's a great service in my opinion and even though I may get some clunkers from time to time, most times I've gotten perfume that I've really enjoyed wearing. This was all because Scentbird gives me the ability to smell like a million bucks without having to spend big bucks doing it.
I have allergies. Certain scents give me migraines, others are not compatible with my body chemistry.
Name brands! Need I say more?
Returns are a breeze! What you think smells absolutely lovely at the perfume counter can sometimes be a bomb when you get it home. Then you are left with a $50-$300 bottle of cologne, perfume, or eau de toilette that will stay on your dresser forever.
With Scentbird, all that is over. You take the quiz, then read all about the scents. Myself, I am a citrusy, light/white flower, herb lover. I pick fragrances that cater to this. One of the scents I absolutely love is "unisex". I never ever thought about using a unisex fragrance before, now it is my sunny when it's gloomy/rainy day scent.
Another thing I love is the colored cases.
Just try it once. What have you got to lose, or better yet think about how many scents you can buy with what you would have spent on one bottle.
Customer service is generally very poor and is filled with circular, scripted excuses rather than results. However, once in a while you connect with a gem.
The selections are limited (I certainly don't have 400,000 choices and they don't change if I update my scent profile nor can I find much by search). Their selection doesn't include many well-known, popular scents/lines and most they do have I would never buy if I smelled them in a shop. I have dozens I will never wear and no good way to pass them on to others or even store them. If you want the better scents, they add 30% "premium" upcharges even if you have their most expensive subscription. And they only give you one free case and then want to ding you for more no matter the level of subscription, frequency of shipments, or added orders. I guess you really only need one case but it seems like a small thing they could do to encourage loyalty and better branding exposure.
Searching for various scent profiles to identify the categories I like best, I've placed additional orders between my monthly shipments and spent quite a lot of money. There are never any promos that would be of interest to me and the inventory is heavy on newer lines that flood several offerings. When they do this, most don't have any reviews and often smell cheap, overly fruity, or very similar to one another.
Fragrance is highly personalized and your body chemistry can react differently from others'. Scentbird does try to give you information to choose the occasion in which you might wear something and the notes you can expect but you can't always tell if the scent is even intended to be masculine or feminine before you receive it. I also find the scent profiles limiting when asked to review and thus the categories tend to be unreliable. The audience (and therefore their reviews) appears to be generally very young and unsophisticated.
Scentbird tries to strike a balance between those that want to experiment or can't find scents locally and those that would like to try before making a large investment. Make no mistake, though, they make a fortune from rebottling these fragrances and most are cheaper, less intense eau de toilettes, not parfum.
Bottom line: I don't feel valued as a Scentbird subscriber.
I recently canceled all of my 10 subscription boxes and only kept 3, this was one of the ones I loved so much I kept it. Personally, I really do love it. I now own all the top designer scents in these travel-friendly sizes. I have a whole collection now. All last year Scentbird also had stuff in the personal care, wellness, makeup and skin care sections but those products seem to be decreasing and disappearing. That's my only complaint, that those sections are dwindling due to popularity. It's where I discovered Lavido and learned I couldn't live without that particular brand in my life... and Kat Von D and CLE. They tend to feature new brands that eventually become viral giants.
As far as perfume brands, they have everything under the sun you could imagine. I bought a giant Michael Kors in 2017 and was so mad because I could've gotten it through Scentbird and realized it wasn't for me, now I'm stuck with a huge purchase... that's the kind of thing Scentbird SAVES you from doing.
Basically, you get to test out a scent (or three) each month and review it... and sometimes buy the full size version which isn't available often so when I get a "credit" to use, I tend to splurge on one of their candles. Their candles are more potent than Yankee or B&BW brands and I'm addicted to the Cedar one. But I digress...
Anyway, if you want to try out expensive brands and "date" the scent before "marrying" and buying the full version then this is for you. Shipping and packaging is always great, nothing has ever arrived broken and the presentation is great (cute sustainable tube box nestled inside recycled paper crinkles) along with a scent card.
If you don't douse yourself in scent (these are pretty strong) then it lasts a month. I ended up with so many decanters because these do last forever, that I started choosing their makeup, vitamins, and other stuff... I really like the program. If they had a "4 or 5" package deal beyond the 3 items per month, I'd probably get it. They give you an option to "buy your whole que" for a 20% off rate, and I may do that because I really like these.
You do get a chance to update your selections before shipping in case something becomes unavailable, which is rare but sometimes can happen with a popular item. Once they ran out of my favorite Versace so they just sent me my next month's preference. They're strong, and the cases are cute and leak-proof. If you like fragrance, you'll save money with this. That's why I've stuck with it so long.
UPDATE JUNE 2021: Lately I don't know what's going on with them. One of my 3 items last month was missing and apart from having to take a photo of the missing item (?!) packaging to show that it really was missing (I'm not sure how that actually proves it was missing) customer service was very kind and they sent it out to me asap.
Another weird thing is that I KNOW which products I'd added to my lineup for June, but when I went onto the site, those products had been removed and my July lineup had been moved into June's for the month. I can understand if they run out of things, delete and replace with what was supposed to come up next in line, but when I went into their site I saw they had plenty of the things that had been deleted. That's just annoying. So I went ahead and added them again. We shall see if they actually arrive.
Run away from scentbird. Run for your lives! Ahhhhhhhh
They also have a nice product sorting search filter that allows me to select the best cologne for me.
So you can smell expensive, good or fresh depending on the situation or person you are trying to attract.
